Here are a few of the famous places that one should visit while travelling in Dehradun.
1.FRI (Forest Research Institute)
FRI (Forest Research Institute) is an institute of the Indian Council Of Forestry Research and Education. Founded in 1878, FRI is the spot for tourists and locals. The beauty of its architecture attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world.
For a time, the building was listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the largest purely brick structure in the world. Bollywood movies like Student Of The Year, Student Of The Year 2 were shot here.
2.IMA (Indian Military Academy)
Established in 1932, IMA (Indian Military Academy) is an officer training academy in Dehradun. On completion of the course or training cadets are permanently commissioned into the Indian army as Lieutenants.
The campus of the academy covers an area of 1400 acres(5.7km 2). The museum of IMA displays artefacts of the historic importance such as the pistol of Lieutenant General Amil Abdullah Khan Niazi of the Pakistani Army, given upon his surrender to Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora of the Indian Army. Lakshya a 2004 Bollywood film is partly shot in IMA.
Sahastradhara means “a thousand springs” or in simple words where thousands of waterfall meets. It is one of the most famous tourists and picnic spots in Dehradun. The place has a unique beauty of nature where water drips from the limestone stalactites.
Located 12 km away from the main city Sahastradhara is famous for caves, waterfalls, terrace farming on the steppe by the local. Enriched with natural beauty, Sahastradhara is also famous for its ropeway(aerial tramway) used to reach the hilltop to find an artificial park and Sai Temple.
4.ROBBER’S CAVE OR GUCHHU PANI
Robber’s cave also known as Guchhu Pani is one of the best picnic or tourist spot in Dehradun. Located at a distance of about 8 km away from the main city near Malsi, Guchhu Pani is famous for caves, cold streams of water, and its natural beauty.
It’s the favourite picnic spot for young people and fun-loving enthusiast. It also goes underground at some of the places inside the caves. People usually rush to Robber’s Cave mostly in summers to get relief from the scorching sun.
It was believed that robbers used to hide in Guchhu Pani after the robbery, so Britishers named it as Robber’s Cave. This river cave is believed to be an abode of Lord Shiva and is very close to Sahastradhara.
5.BUDDHA TEMPLE (DEHRADUN)
Build-in 1965, Budhha Temple is a Tibetan Monastery and a holy temple of Lord Budhha in Clement Town, Dehradun. It is one of the most visited places in Dehradun. Budhha Temple is also the centre of attraction for many international tourists and Buddhist followers. It is built to promote and protect the religious and cultural understandings of Buddhism.
It is built in Japanese architecture style where the complex atmosphere provides mental peace equal to Buddhist monks. Another major attraction of Budhha Temple lies at its fourth floor where open circled viewing platform provides amazing 360o view of the Doon valley. Shopping complex in the temple has a series of shopping and eating shops.
Lachhiwala, now known as ‘Nature’s Park’ is one of the most popular tourist spots in Dehradun. It has man-made water pools among the forest with a river flowing by. People mainly visit this place in the summers to swim in the cold water pools. Located at Doiwala block in Dehradun it is situated 20kms away from the main city on Haridwar-Rishikesh road.
The primary source of water for the ponds is the stream of Suswa river that flows across Dehradun. It is one of the best family places to visit. It provides a calm and fun serene environment for visitors.
The lush greenery and fresh unpolluted air make the place an ideal destination for trekking. The rich natural forests are home to several bird species. The Laxman Siddh Temple is another centre of attraction nearby.
Located near Raipur, Dehradun Maldevta is one of the popular tourist attractions of the city. The calm surrounding and peaceful sound of the river makes this place favourite for tourists and the locals.
The distance of Maldevta from the main city is around 10kms. Most of the tourists and Doonites(the people of Dehradun) visit this place in summers to chill in the icy cold water. People soak in the cool water of the river, go for nature walks, play games and enjoy bird watching here. The temple of Maldevta is the star attraction of this place.
8.KHALANGA WAR MEMORIAL
Khalanga War Memorial is a monument in Dehradun dedicated to the brave memory of Gorkha soldiers who fought the British in 1814 in the Battle of Nalapani. It was the first battle of the Anglo-Nepalese war. This is the world’s first memorial erected by the army to pay respect to the opponents.
The war memorial is on a hilltop and is surrounded by thick forest. The way or road to Khalanga War Memorial is very beautiful and peaceful that it touches everyone’s soul. The structure falls under the aegis of the Archaeological survey. Every year a fair is held at the site to pay tribute to the soldiers and to celebrate Gorkha Culture and History.
