Surrounded by beautiful mountains and the Yamuna river Lakhamandal Temple is 35 km from Chakrata and around 109 km from Dehradun located on Gangotri Yamunotri Road in the Jaunsar-Bawar region. . Dehra Dun is the last station and Jolly Grant Airport in the outskirts of Dehra Dun, the only airport in the vicinity.

The Lakhamandal Temple is constructed in ancient Nagara style of North Indian architecture. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main attraction of this temple shrine is the graphite lingam, which shines when water is poured on it.

Inside the temple are idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Kartikeya, Lord Ganesha. There are around 150 stone engraved figures in the temple and some of them date back to the 4th and 5th centuries. The embellished architecture of the temple displays the richness of Indian heritage and it has been declared as a Monument of National Importance.

The place is popular among devotees of the Shakti cult as Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped as the embodiment of Shakti.

According to the legend, Lakhamandal is the place where Duryodhan tried to kill the Pandavas by making them stay at Laksha Griha, the house made of Wax. But fortunately, Pandavas escaped from there by running away through a Cave.

The next end of the cave can be seen at a distance of 2 km from Lakha Mandal. This place is called Dhundhi Odaari in the local Jaunsari language, meaning misty or foggy cave.

Lakhamandal figures prominently in the pages of Mahabharata — one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. You can still see the cave openings on the face of the hill range in front of you.

The most common way of reaching Lakhamandal, which is about 100 km from Chakata, is by road. You can arrive at Mussoorie and then hire a taxi, wait for a shared cab, or a bus to reach Lakhamandal. A taxi, however, is the most comfortable means of transport for those travelling to Lakhamandal from Chakrata.
