Jamaican – born D.J clive ‘Kol herc” Campbell pioneered the use of DJing percussion ‘breaks’ in hip hop music.
Hip Hop music has been a powerful medium for protesting the impact of a legal institution, particularly police and prisons.
RISE OF DESI HIP HOP CULTURE
The trend of hip hop spread rapidly throughout the world and reached India, as a fact western countries always influence developing countries. Nowadays, hip-hop is very popular in India.
The youngster simply loves it. However, not everybody knows how all of it started in our country.
THE FIRST RAPPER OF INDIA
In 1990, hip hop was introduced in India, by Punjabi rapper Baba Sehgal started the trend in India with a major hit song like ‘Thanda Thanda paani’.
In the early 2000s, a non-Indian man provided Indian hip hop with the spark it so badly needed now know as Bohemia(Roger David), a Pakistani American rapper living in California along with a hip hop producer(Sha One), released his debut album ‘vich pardesan de’.
With the craze of desi hip hop now it was the time for a group of five individuals highly inspired by Bohemia, together known as ‘Mafia Mundeer’, came crashing into the Punjabi rap scene. The group produced many hit Punjabi rap songs throughout their career.
Unfortunately, the glory of this group was short-lived, several members of the group parted ways to work independently. Now, these names need no introduction and have tasted a huge success in Bollywood popularly know as Yo-Yo Honey Singh, Badshah, Raftaar, Ikka, and Lil golu.
The birth of gully rap/original face of hip hop
Everyone knows that a hip-hop is an art form that was born in the streets of Bronx, New york. It was revolutionized by the likes of jay-z and Nas. Inspired by these legends, Naved Shaikh(Nazey) a young boy, emerged from the street of Mumbai. Nazey dropped his first track “Aafat” on youTube with a raw music video in January 2014. The track went viral because of nazey versatility, impressive skills, constructive storytelling.
Another young rapper from the streets of Mumbai started making his presence felt with his awesome rapping skills. Vivian Fernandes, better known by his stage name Divine, started gaining popularity with his hit single “ye mera Bombay” that he released on his youtube channel in 2013. He became so popular that he got signed as an artist by sony music entertainment. In 2015, Divine and Nazey collaborated for a song called “meri gully mai” that was uploaded on sony music and became a major hit song.
Present scenario of desi hip hop
The movie was released by name “gully boy” on 14th Feb 2019 and became a box office hit with 8.4/10 on the IMDb rating. With the success of the movie, it paved a way for many underground desi hip hop rappers to showcase their talents, after that even a platform was provided with name hustle to desi rappers where they hustle with each other to be on the top. MC Bella of Dehradun, Uttarakhand won the title of MTV hustle season 1.
Many rappers like Divine, Nazey, kri$na, Emiway, and karma has represented India globally. Let’s just don’t underestimate our girls they are in the game too and giving the hardcore competition to boys here what you say about Raja kumari? The name needs no introduction.
With these kinds of rappers, the future of desi hip hop can be seen as bright.
