Also known as Devbhoomi, Uttarkashi, literally meaning ‘Kashi of the North’, is a quaint little town nestled in the lap of the mighty Himalayas in the hill state of Uttarakhand. Uttarkashi is the district headquarters of Uttarkashi district.
The beautiful town is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1158 m above sea level. The town is a famous tourist destination in the region. The region was more in the favour of religious tourism initially but lately, the spurring of trekking and adventure activities invites a lot of non-religion tourists as well.
Uttarkashi is also called Shivnagri. The town has a number of temples and ashrams. The place is known for its religious people, weather, education. The famous Vishwanath temple in the town is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a unique “Mahadev-ka-Vishal Trishul (Shiva’s great Trident) made up of eight major metals located in front of the temple.
It is believed that Lord Shiva killed Bakasur with that Trishul. The place is also a real paradise for nature lovers, fun and adventure enthusiasts, and sports lovers.

Amongst all the treks in Uttarakhand, Dayara Bugyal is considered to be the most breathtaking trek. The trek brings you to a high grassland situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand which stands tall at an elevation of 10,000-12,500ft.
Dayara Bugyal, along with its twin, Gidara Bugyal, is perhaps one of the most beautiful alpine meadows in India. There is a small lake located near and around the trek.
The trek starts Barsu a hamlet nestled on the Haridwar-Gangotri road which is 32 km from Uttarkashi. The trek of the Dayara Bugyal trails through gorgeous Oak forests, clear water bodies, and sprawling grasslands offer you the views of specks of huts, grazing sheep all while overlooking the valley and high-rise mountains.
Dodital is a freshwater lake in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand situated at a height of 3,024 meters., From Uttarkashi, a short jeep ride of 19 kilometers will take you to Sangamchatti from where the 24 km trek to Dodital begins.
It is named after the rare Dodi (Himalayan Trout) that can be found in this lake This is a mostly gentle trek, with overnight halt options at the village of Agora or Bebra. Dodital is said to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesh and is also the source of the Assi Ganga, a tributary to the Bhagirathi.
Lying amid dense forests of Oaks and Pines, Nachiketa Lake is a beautiful lake in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand at an elevation of 2457 m. The place is a famous tourist attraction in the region.
Beside this lake is a temple of Nag Devta and every year during the festival of Nag Panchami villagers visit this divine place. It holds a mythical story that this Lake was named after the son of Uddalak. A picturesque hut on the corner of the lake with white fencing makes the view picture-perfect.
Vishwanath temple is one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Uttarkashi, situated on the bank of the river Bhagirathi. The temple offers a spectacular view of the river Bhagirathi along with the surrounding mountains.
The Viswanath Temple is the most important and ancient holy shrine in this region. Of the many temples in Uttarkashi, the temple of Lord Vishwanath is unrivaled in importance. Shiva, the presiding deity of this temple, is worshipped all day here.

On the banks of the city of Bhagirathi is the ancient Shakti temple. The doors of this temple are open throughout the year. But on Navratri and Dussehra, there is a crowd of devotees here. Travelers visiting Gangotri Yamunotri during the journey period arrive here to visit.
Visiting the Shakti temple in Uttarkashi has special significance. The temple has the most interesting Shakti pillar. The myth dictates that you can try to move the trident with all your body weight, and it will be in vain. Try to then push it with a finger, and it will move. This Shakti pillar is a center of attraction and reverence for the travelers coming to Gangotri and Yamunotri.
Established in 1965, the Nehru Mountaineering Institute is India’s premier autonomous institute. The institute is rated as one of the best mountaineering institutes in India and also considered as the most prestigious mountaineering institute in Asia.
The aim of the Institute is to introduce and initiate young men, women, and school children to the mountains and nature through its various Mountaineering and Adventure courses.
Essentially March to November is the best time to visit Uttarkashi. This is the period when a number of festivals occur in the area, drawing tourists and pilgrims from far and wide, especially during the monsoon.
Summer temperatures can go as high as 30°C and winters down to sub-zero levels. The town is filled with scattered temples, giving visitors a serene and peaceful feeling.
